The Trust was honoured to welcome Tim Knox CVO, Director of the Royal Collection to Norfolk, last Friday 6th March, for the final of our Winter Lecture Series of the season titled Commemorating Kings: Funerals, Tombs and Memorials to the Kings and Queens of England, from Sutton Hoo to today.
He gave an interesting, informative, and witty talk on the extraordinary legacy of English Royals and memorials. He took us from the ship burials of Sutton Hoo, through the tombs of the medieval kings, the Tudors and Stuarts, the lack of Hanoverian monuments contrasted with the extravagance of Queen Victoria, and up to date concluding with the late Queen Elizabeth II. His illustrated talk included the background to the ‘resting places’ of Westminster Abbey, St George’s Chapel, Windsor, and the Royal Mausoleum at Frogmore.
Our speaker was appointed Director of the Royal Collection by Queen Elizabeth II in 2018. Prior to that he was Director and Marlay Curator of the Fitzwilliam Museum in Cambridge from 2013 to 2018. Between 2005 and 2013, he was Director of Sir John Soane’s Museum in London, and from 2002 to 2005 he was Head Curator of the National Trust. He regularly lectures and writes on country houses, architecture, sculpture, and the history of collecting bringing his wealth of knowledge to the evening.
The Trust would like to extend its thanks to Sarah, Countess of Leicester for hosting this event at her home.
Thank you to those of you who have attended our Winter Lecture Series over the past three months, we do hope you have enjoyed these evenings.
