Ian Hinton, ‘Ladbrooke’s Church Lithographs: a collection and analysis of the lithographs of Robert and John Berney Ladbrooke.’, Journal of the Norfolk Historic Buildings Group, Volume 8, 2025
Anyone with a serious interest in Norfolk’s churches will want to consult this very helpful, scholarly, systematic and complete collection of the 678 Ladbrooke lithographs that record the external appearance of these buildings in the 1820s before many of them were altered by Victorian architects. Every lithograph is illustrated together with photographs of the churches today. The images are necessarily small and several to a page but are sufficiently clear for the details to be legible. The gazetteer of the county’s churches is preceded by over 60 pages of technical analysis and, as the Ladbrookes did not draw the Norwich churches, followed by a section illustrating James Sillet’s Views of Churches Chapels and other public edifices in the city of Norwich of 1828.
The Ladbrooke images were in some cases corrected by the artists in later editions and these changes are noted and illustrated. To have assembled, presented and analysed all this information in one compact and modestly priced volume is a great achievement by Ian Hinton to whom present and future students of Norfolk’s churches will be much indebted.
