Local artist James Johnston is opening his studio in Mill Common, Ashby-St-Mary, Norwich NR4 7BW what3words://fights.handyman.noticing

Work includes drawings of local churches alongside recent paintings and drawings from the studio.

At the start of 2024 James undertook the mission to draw 52 churches, one a week, starting with his local church Ashby-St-Mary and radiating outwards ending at Gelderston St Michael, jus8.8 miles away.

Why churches?

“As a landscape artist living in Norfolk, I am often drawn to ‘buildings in the landscape’ where the eye is drawn to a focal point.  Buildings form an integral part of the landscape. The contrast of linear geometrical manmade structures set against organic natural forms gives great artistic excitement. Church buildings and their graveyards are places of great peace and tranquillity, a great place to sit and draw.”

It is amazing how often many hours can go by when one is focused and absorbed in a drawing
