We are delighted to announce that Nick Crane will be discussing his latest book The Path More Travelled – The Secret History of Britain’s Footpaths at Elsing Hall, NR20 3DX, exclusively for members of the Norfolk Churches Trust.
The evening will commence at 6.00pm (please arrive promptly) with a welcome drink followed by an illustrated talk by Nick, after which there will be a short Q & A session. It is sure to be a most interesting evening.
The book is a fascinating coast-to-coast look at Britain’s historic footpaths and byways from the acclaimed geographer and author Nicholas Crane. Discover the prehistoric routeways walked by European migrants 12,000 years ago, how Saxons, Normans and the industrial revolution changed our landscapes and how our beloved national parks emerged from the ashes of two world wars. Nicholas Crane will take you on a journey to discover some of his most memorable walks and calls on all of us to rediscover the lifeblood of our landscapes.

Nick’s latest book, The Path More Travelled, The Secret History of British Footpaths was published in 2026 and is currently on tour with its author. As a geographer and broadcaster, Nick presented the BBC2 TV series’ Coast, Map Man, Great British Journeys, Britannia and Town. Nick’s travels include a solo, 10,000-kilometre, mountain-walk across Europe from Cape Finisterre in Spain, to Istanbul in Turkey, and a bicycle ride across the Himalayas, Tibet and Gobi Desert to the Pole of Inaccessibility: the geographical centre of Asia. Nick’s earlier books include Clear Waters Rising, Two Degrees West, Mercator, Great British Journeys, Coast, You Are Here and Latitude.
The Making of the British Landscape (2016) was praised by the critics as ‘Ambitious, magnificent’ (Guardian); ‘Storytelling at its best’ (The Times); ‘A geographer’s love letter to the British and the land that formed them’ (Sunday Times).
Between 2015 and 2018, Nick served as President of the Royal Geographical Society and in 2021 was elected a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society.
