Peter Kavanagh *

Peter is a Norfolk based professional artist, author, illustrator and tutor.  His main career has been as a children’s book author and illustrator.  He has had over 160 books published over the last 30 years by companies such as Penguin, Collins and Scholastic.

His approach to illustration is as a storyteller and he brings plenty of humour to his books. He has been visiting schools and libraries for over 20 years as an author and illustrator. He enjoys sharing hus books with the children and drawing fun characters for them. He also runs workshops in writing and drawing and he particularly likes to demonstrate how one can tell a story with pictures.

Peter loves working with oils and watercolour to create landscapes, portraits, nudes and flowers. He exhibits locally at mixed exhibitions and during Open Studios. Peter thinks drawing is the essential skill that everyone needs to create pictures, whatever the subject. Drawing is not just the few lines you put down before you begin the painting. Every
mark you make in whatever medium is an act of drawing. You need to know how to draw to gain control over your mark making and improve your painting skills.

He is very good at teaching drawing. People always says to him that they can’t draw and can’t learn. But he finds that when shown how to go about it properly, it really isn’t that difficult. With some practice you will quickly gain in skill and confidence and see a big difference in your paintings as well.

He runs art classes and workshops in Norfolk and teaches figure and portrait drawing, landscape painting, flowers and still life and teaches how to use charcoal, watercolour and oil paint. He is happy to work with individuals and to visit art groups. Do get in touch with him if you’d like to attend a class or arrange some tuition.
