Tim Knox CVO, Director of the Royal Collection, will be exploring the extraordinary legacy of English Royal tombs and memorials, from the earliest times to the present day. From the mysterious ship burials of Sutton Hoo, through the religious foundations of the medieval kings, to the great Royal ‘dormitories’ of Westminster Abbey and St George’s Chapel at Windsor. He will examine the vicissitudes of the tombs of Henry VIII and the House of Stuart, and the curious dearth of Hanoverian monuments, contrasted with the sepulchral extravagance of Queen Victoria – culminating in the Royal Mausoleum at Frogmore. The lecture also touches on more recent memorials to twentieth century monarchs, tombs that were never realised, and the sombre magnificence of State Funerals through the ages.

Our Speaker, Tim Knox, was appointed Director of the Royal Collection by Queen Elizabeth II in 2018. Before that he was Director and Marlay Curator of the Fitzwilliam Museum in Cambridge 2013-2018. Between 2005 and 2013, he was Director of Sir John Soane’s Museum in London, and from 2002-2005 he was Head Curator of the National Trust.

He regularly lectures and writes on country houses, architecture, sculpture, and the history of collecting. Publications include Sir John Soane’s Museum London (2010), and The British Ambassador’s Residence Paris (2011).

The venue for the evening will be Model Farm, Holkham NR23 1RP
