The Quality of Love – with author Ariane Bankes

Date: 21 June 2024 6pm £25

You may have read some of the publicity surrounding the recent publication of The Quality of Love by NCT member and Norfolk resident Ariane Bankes. When Ariane’s mother Celia Paget died, she inherited a trunk full of letters, diaries and photos belonging to her mother and identical twin sister Mamaine. This correspondence charted the remarkable lives of the Paget sisters and their friends and lovers, including Arthur Koestler, Albert Camus, Sartre and de Beauvoir, Edmund Wilson, Sacheverell Sitwell and George Orwell.

Out of this resonant private archive The Quality of Love weaves the story of the two charismatic, unusually beautiful and smart sisters who overcome a meagre education to take 1930s London society by storm and make their lives among Europe’s foremost intellectuals during the twentieth century’s most dramatic decades. Above all, it is a sparkling and poignant portrait of the deep connection between two spirited twins.

“Taking us from the high bohemia of 1930s London to the European intellectual scene of the 1940s and 1950s, Ariane Bankes weaves a story as spirited and alluring as the Paget sisters at its centre” Antonia Fraser

Ariane has kindly agreed to talk about her book on Friday 21 June at Elsing Hall, Elsing, Dereham NR20 3DX. The evening will start at 6pm with a drink on the garden terrace at Elsing Hall (or inside if necessary) followed by the talk, finishing at approximately 8pm.
