Justin Nolan returns to do another tour for us on Saturday 12th April.
‘Cley and Glandford Churches: The Middle Ages as they were and as they ought to have been’. This tour pairs up the magnificent church of Cley next the Sea – a monument to the faith and architectural skill of the medieval period – with Glandford Church, a confection of the late nineteenth century. We will consider how the thinkers of the nineteenth century conceived of the past and look at its reality as well. Both churches have interiors rich in interest and quality.
Afternoon Tea will be served at Cley after the tour.
Justin Nolan is a teacher and lecturer who has over thirty years’ experience. He has lectured extensively at the National Portrait Gallery over two decades, and in Venice and Rome. He is a former Head of History of Art at Eton College. His interest in Norfolk Churches stems from his early years growing up on the Broads and he now lives near Reepham. Justin’s aim is to bring churches alive by reference not only to their material reality but the memories they evoke of past lives in societies so different from ours.
Please meet at St Martin’s Church Glandford, Hurdle Lane, Glandford, NR25 7JP at 2pm.
Travel between the two churches will be the responsibility of ticket holders.
Please note that no tickets will be issued for this tour. You will receive a confirmatory email when you book, and your name will be held at Glandford when you arrive.
